The Truth About Christian Nationalism
Ask the average person what Christian Nationalism is and you will hear a variety of answers. Those answers would include but not limited to “Christian Nationalism is creating a Christian Nation and holy pride in that nation”. “It is when Christians run the majority of the country and the state religion is Christianity.”
There is nothing Christian about Christian Nationalism. It is aa dangerous, and divisive as Nazism. Christianity (the religion) diverges from the Good News of the Gospel. Christian Nationalism does the same thing, it does not fit with the Good News of the Gospel. Christian Nationalism is fully of hate. It is designed to destroy not only the people who believe in it, but the people who are targeted by it.
Jesus warns us in Matthew 7:15-20 the following:
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
The fruit of Christian Nationalism isn’t a Christian Nation. The fruit of Christian Nationalism is hate. The fruit of Christ is love. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus never advocated hate. He never did anything remotely hateful. He did, however, challenge the religious teachers. He was against religion and the false pride religion brought. He was against the things that would further separate us from God.
So how can you tell a true Christian from a Christian Nationalist? The fruit of the Spirit (Holy Spirit) and the works of the Flesh. Let’s look at Genesis 5:19-25:
19, Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, Lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have criticized the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Walking in the Spirit is not hating your neighbor. Jesus called us to love our neighbors as ourselves. It is not hating the poor or dismissing the sick. It is about caring as much for your neighbor as you do for yourself. No one is perfect, because all have sinned and fallen short before God. God doesn’t call us to racial pride. He calls us to be imitators of Jesus. So let’s do that. Let’s imitate Jesus and follow God commandments. He calls us to be holy before Him. He calls us to love Him and we prove that by loving others as we love ourselves.
